District History

Travis County Rural Fire Prevention District # 1 was organized by the Western Hills Emergency Council on April 17, 1961, following a major brush fire that burned hundreds of acres in the Westlake Peninsula and threatened the City of West Lake Hills for an anxious two-day period. Accordingly, the District was authorized and established by the Travis County Commissioners Court on April 1, 1962. TCRFPD # 1 was established for the protection of life and property and to serve the district’s community not only as a fire protection agency, but also as an emergency medical first responder organization. Until 1983, TCRFPD # 1 was sustained through donations, even though it had legal power to levy taxes. In 1983, the Board of Commissioners decided the taxing authority should be exercised to meet the increasing needs of the rapidly growing District. In October of 1995 TCRFPD # 1 converted, by general election, to Travis County Emergency Services District # 9 to provide for adequate funding to address the growing needs of the District in fire protection and primary emergency medical care.
